If you love delicious Thai food, then Snackbar The Bird is a place you need to check out. But this isn’t just any Thai restaurant – it’s one of the most famous eateries in Amsterdam’s Chinatown. Though the space is small with only four tables, the food here makes up for it in spades.
At The Bird, you can choose from nearly 100 different Thai dishes, each bursting with flavor. Whether you prefer vegetables, lamb, beef, chicken, or shrimp, there’s something on the menu to suit every taste. The food is authentic, fresh, and incredibly satisfying. Despite its popularity, The Bird remains a humble establishment, offering just a few tables and a casual dining experience. You may even have to wait for a seat if the restaurant is full, but the food is worth the wait. If you find yourself hungry but the tables are all taken, don’t worry – there’s always the option of going to its bigger sister restaurant across the street, where you can enjoy the same incredible food in a larger setting.

Why should you visit this restaurant? The Bird is not just a restaurant – it’s a place where you can savour authentic Thai flavours in a cozy, intimate setting. If you enjoy Thai cuisine, this is a must-visit. The combination of quality food and its location in Chinatown makes it a standout dining spot in the city.

The nicest part about The Bird is the incredible food, which is both authentic and delicious. The downside is the limited seating, meaning it can get crowded quickly. If you’re traveling with a group or during busy hours, be prepared to wait for a table. It’s best to come around 17:00 when the crowds haven’t yet descended. You can expect to spend around 30 to 60 minutes here enjoying your meal. During off-peak seasons, visiting is easier and less stressful.
From New Market, it’s a quick 12-minute walk to Snackbar The Bird. Head towards the Zeedijk area and you’ll spot the restaurant on your right. It’s a pleasant stroll, and you’ll be able to check out the vibrant Chinatown on your way.

About This Area
THE OLD CHURCH & NEW MARKET
This area, called de Oudezijds or Old Side, is indeed the oldest part of town. It was built before the Golden Age (17th century) and the famous Canal Belt. The church standing in the middle has something peculiar about it. It is the oldest building in the city, so it seems quite understandable that it is now called Oude Kerk (Old Church). Not all streets and canals in this area are suitable for children, avoid the so-called Red Light District.
